Test Report; Underwater Corrosion experiment of carbon steel in the existance of different Oxygen concentration

Since September 2011, we have been holding training sessions once every two months under the guidance of Prof. Emeritus of Osaka University / Prof. Nogi, who we are conducting joint research with.

In the last session, we had a lecture on the effect of dissolved oxygen (* 1) in water to metal corrosion, and a corrosion test was conducted using a nut (material CS400) as specimen.

Tap water boiled for 10 minutes was prepared for the purpose of reducing dissolved oxygen and put the test specimen before sealing tightly in glass bottles under following 4 conditioned water and observed for more than 1 month.

① Full fill the bottle with tap water boiled for 10 minutes with no air space in bottle.

② Seal the bottle with tap water boiled for 10 minutes with some air.

③ Full fill the bottle with tap water with no air space.

④ Fill the bottle with tap water and air.

In comparison with the generated volume of rust deposited, it was found that the total amount of dissolved oxygen in water was;

④ > ③ > ② > ①

And through the experience, we were able to deeply understand the relationship between dissolved oxygen and metal corrosion.  (See also the photo of the experimental results.)

Through training sessions, NEURON will continue to acquire not only knowledge about corrosion, but also broad knowledge such as welding, basics of metallurgy, and metal fatigue, and will put it to practical use.
